Every year over 2 lakh aspirants register for CAT and this is an ever-increasing number. CAT is the most sought after test since the score is useful in getting admission into the top colleges of India. Although there are other tests held in the country and they can help in securing admission into your desired b-school, most of them cater to a similar pool of colleges. Few tests are also specifically organized by the college itself for its individual admission process.
Due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak across the globe, many companies have either halted their hiring procedures or are laying off people which means that this year's Cat 2020 exam will see a huge jump in terms of the number of aspirants registering. We can expect to see an approximate jump of 30% in terms of the number of registered aspirants. How did I deduce that? If you look back at the 2007-08 economic crisis, when many were laid off and hiring was at an all-time low, unemployed or underpaid people resorted to education. Amongst their choices, MBA was one of the popular options. If we analyze the data, we can see a sudden spike from 1.9 lakh test-takers in 2006 to 2.5 lakh test-takers in 2007 and subsequently 2.91 lakh test-takers in 2008. From 2009 onwards, we can observe the downward trend in the number of test-takers. Thus, I firmly believe we will be able to observe this pattern again, in CAT 2020.
CAT consists of 3 sections, namely, Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Quantitative Ability (QA), and Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation(LRDI). To get into your desired college, you first need to analyze the past trends in both overall and sectional cut-offs. In the forthcoming posts, I will be covering the details regarding the selection parameters, previous cut-offs, specializations, etc to help the aspirants make an informed decision about any college.
